GPS Trailer Tracking for Dropped Trailers and Multi-Site Fleets

When the tractor and trailer separate

A trailer is dropped at a customer’s yard on Tuesday. By Thursday, nobody in the office is certain whether it has left the site, moved to another depot or remained where the driver left it. Somebody starts ringing round. GPS trailer tracking for dropped trailers and multi-site fleets gives the transport office somewhere else to look first.

A tracking unit fitted to the tractor follows the tractor, not the trailer left behind. An independent trailer tracker remains with the asset, allowing operators to check its reported location, review movement and receive alerts when it enters or leaves a defined area.

Power supply, reporting frequency, mobile coverage and geofence settings all affect what the operator can see. Freight crime data also provides useful context for deciding where alerts and security controls matter most across customer yards, depots and other sites.

What independent trailer tracking shows

With the TrafficAngel asset tracking system, each trailer has its own location record. The operator can see its last reported position, how long it has remained at a site and its movement history. Geofences can record arrivals and departures and send alerts when a trailer leaves a defined area or moves during configured times.

What freight crime figures mean for trailer tracking

NaVCIS processed 3,424 HGV and cargo crime notifications during 2025, equivalent to around nine a day, with an estimated cost-price loss of £65 million.

Not every notification involved a stolen trailer, but the figures show the scale of the risk facing commercial fleets. When a trailer is moved without authority, a movement or geofence alert can reduce the time between it leaving and the operator becoming aware.

Tracking does not prevent theft or guarantee recovery. It gives the operator earlier information to check the movement and, where necessary, pass the latest reported location to the police or insurer.

How trailer trackers work without tractor power

TrafficAngel’s trailer and asset trackers are compact, battery-powered devices, so they do not rely on power from the tractor unit. They provide scheduled GPS location updates, movement history and alerts through the TrafficAngel platform while the trailer is uncoupled.

Battery life and reporting intervals

Battery life varies between devices and is affected by how often the tracker reports. Frequent updates provide a more current position but generally consume more power. Longer intervals suit trailers that remain parked for extended periods.

The expected battery life should therefore be checked against the required reporting schedule rather than treated as a fixed three or four-year figure.

Matching the tracker to the trailer

A trailer used for daily trunking may need frequent updates and movement alerts. An infrequently used trailer may be better suited to longer reporting intervals that preserve battery life.

TrafficAngel can specify the tracker and reporting setup around the trailer’s use, available power supply and the alerts the operator needs.

What geofencing gives a multi-site fleet

Geofencing creates a virtual boundary around a depot, customer site or another location used by the fleet. When a trailer crosses that boundary, the tracking platform can record the time and, where configured, send an alert.

Arrival and departure records. Entry and exit times show when a trailer reached or left each site. This reduces the need to call individual yards for updates and provides a timestamped location record, although it does not replace proof of delivery.

Out-of-hours movement alerts. An alert can notify the operator when a trailer leaves a yard outside its expected operating hours. This allows the movement to be checked without waiting until the site reopens.

Dwell time by site. Arrival and departure records show how long trailers remain at different locations. Operators can use this information to identify recurring delays and discuss them with the customer concerned.

Trailer location for planning. Planners can see which site each tracked trailer is at before assigning the next load. Its load status or availability will still need to be confirmed separately unless that information is recorded within an integrated system.

Where trailer tracking stops and cargo protection begins

Trailer tracking shows where a trailer is and when it moves. It cannot detect somebody cutting the curtain or removing goods while the trailer remains in its expected location.

Loads at greater risk may therefore need separate security. TrafficAngel’s CargoProtect system uses remotely accessible AI cameras with automatic audio-visual and fog deterrents to detect and respond to suspicious activity around the load.

Fitting trackers across a working trailer fleet

A fleet does not need to fit every trailer at once. Operators can start with trailers that are regularly dropped at customer sites or moved between yards, then extend tracking across the fleet.

Battery-powered trackers do not require a permanent connection to the trailer’s electrical supply, which can simplify fitting. TrafficAngel can specify, install, configure and test the system around each trailer’s use, with ongoing support available after installation.

If you run more trailers than tractor units or regularly lose sight of assets between sites, call 01825 768 555, e-mail sales@traffificangel.co.uk, sau contact the TrafficAngel team.

Întrebări frecvente

What happens if a trailer tracker loses mobile signal?

The tracker may be unable to send its latest position until coverage returns. Some devices store location data and upload it later, but this depends on the tracker, network and reporting setup. Operators should check how the chosen device handles gaps in coverage.

Can a tracker identify which tractor unit is pulling the trailer?

Not necessarily. A standard trailer tracker reports the location and movement of the trailer. Identifying the connected tractor unit may require a compatible coupling system, driver input or integration with vehicle tracking data.

Does trailer tracking show whether a trailer is loaded or empty?

Location data alone cannot confirm the trailer’s load status. That information must be recorded separately or supplied through an integrated fleet management system.

Where is a trailer tracker fitted?

The position depends on the trailer and the type of tracker being used. It should be protected from damage and tampering without obstructing the GPS or mobile signal. A professional installer can select a suitable position and test the device before the trailer returns to service.
