If it stopped in a lay-by for eleven minutes, the tracking data will show the stop. It will not show what happened during that time. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trafficangel.co.uk\/nl_be\/commerciele-dashcams-voor-wagenparken\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cameras can provide that extra detail.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Who was driving depends on the setup<\/h3>\n<p>A tracker follows the vehicle. Identifying the driver requires the system to have driver identification set up. Without that, you cannot assume who was behind the wheel.<\/p>\n<p>If tracking data is used to monitor workers or support decisions about their performance, <a href=\"https:\/\/ico.org.uk\/about-the-ico\/responses-to-ico-consultations\/monitoring-workers-guidance-summary-of-responses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data protection requirements<\/a> also apply. The ICO specifically includes work vehicle tracking within its guidance on monitoring workers.<\/p>\n<h3>The live map runs behind<\/h3>\n<p>Tracking positions update as new data is received, so the point on the map may be slightly behind the vehicle itself. This is usually less noticeable on longer journeys but can be more obvious on short urban routes. Ask the supplier how often positions update.<\/p>\n<h3>It does not tell you why<\/h3>\n<p>Three harsh braking events at the same corner show a pattern. They do not tell you what caused it. The cause could be the driver, the road, the load or the sensor. The system flags the event. The fleet manager still needs to work out what happened.<\/p>\n            <\/div>\n                    <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div><section class=\"w-full py-8 bg-white\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"container\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"flex flex-wrap items-stretch justify-start w-full gap-6 lg:gap-10 lg:flex-nowrap\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"content-block-body flex flex-col justify-start order-2 w-full pr-4 mb-6 lg:mb-0 lg:basis-1\/2 lg:order-1 text-left\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Where cameras add more detail<\/h2>\n<p>Tracking shows where the vehicle was. Legitimate interests may be suitable, but the operator needs to consider why the tracking is needed and balance that against the driver&#8217;s privacy.<\/p>\n<p>If legitimate interests is used, the decision should be recorded in a legitimate interests assessment.<\/p>\n<h3>The impact assessment<\/h3>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/ico.org.uk\/for-organisations\/uk-gdpr-guidance-and-resources\/accountability-and-governance\/data-protection-impact-assessments-dpias\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Data Protection Impact Assessment<\/a> helps the operator identify privacy risks before monitoring starts.<\/p>\n<p>The ICO says a DPIA is required where monitoring is likely to present a high risk. This can include vehicle tracking used to monitor driver behaviour or driving style.<\/p>\n<p>The assessment should cover what information is collected, why it is needed, who can access it, how long it is kept and what measures are in place to protect drivers.<\/p>\n<h3>Out of hours and private use<\/h3>\n<p>Private vehicle use needs separate consideration.<\/p>\n<p>The ICO says employers will rarely be able to justify tracking a work vehicle while it is being used privately. If private use is allowed, drivers should have a way to stop tracking outside working hours.<\/p>\n<p>Decide how this will work before the system is installed.<\/p>\n<p>None of this prevents a fleet from using tracking. It means the operator needs to decide why the data is being collected, document the decision and tell drivers what is being monitored.
